|||||
Bevan Chipman was born December 30, 1934 in American Fork, Utah. He attended Brigham Young University for a year and a half and fulfilled an L.D.S. mission to Australia for two years. Following his return to Utah he earned a Bachelors Degree in Sociology in 1961 and a Masters Degree in Social Work in 1963 from the University of Utah. From 1967 until his retirement in June 1995, he was employed as a social worker and counselor at Alta High School in Jordan District. About 1988-89, when he realized that he was retiring soon he decided to “get serious“ about painting. He took classes and workshops from Kent Wallis, Ken Baxter, Ed Maryon, and Earl Jones. During the summer of 1989 he also went to La Romita School of Art in Terni, Italy and studied under several master painters. After his retirement he was able to combine his interest in travel with his love for painting. He visited Turkey, Greece, Mexico, Czech Republic, and Poland. Later he continued traveling in Europe and in the Far East. Everywhere he went he used his camera to record images and later painted them in his studio. On occasion he also painted on location. Chipman painted for the joy of painting and to share the beauty in the world with others. He did not have any particular philosophy or “axe to grind,“ and avoided making political statements. Painting provided him with a rich retirement, and selling his paintings paid for his trips abroad. He had several “solo“ exhibits and numerous group shows at the Bountiful Art Center, Art Access Gallery, Glendinning Gallery and several other galleries throughout Utah. He won a number of awards including two “Best of Show“ awards with the Utah Watercolor Society. Biography courtesy the artist. |
