Carolyn Ann Coalson was born in Ohio in 1939.  As one Utah’s leading painters of abstraction, she creates paintings with delicate layers of paint.  She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Coalson studied in California at Santa Monica City College (1965–66) and at DeAnza College in Cupertino.  She began study at the University of Utah where she earned her BFA and MFA in 1976.  Canto (1996) demonstrates her skill in layering paint on paper.  Undersite (1990) is another example of her work.

Coalson won a Utah Arts Council Purchase Award for 21 April.  She has also exhibited at the Springville Museum Spring Salons in 1992, in 1997, and in 2004.  Two of her paintings Tell Me If You Can and Untitled ’85 are included in the Utah State Art Collection. She is a member of the Utah Watercolor Society.
