Hagen Haltern was born in western Germany in 1947. In his drawings, he merges abstract and realist form.  His drawings are often broad marble powder washes, interspersed with subtle and intricately drawn architectural elements, landscapes, or figurative forms.  He lives in Provo, Utah.

After studying art in Cologne, Germany from 1964 to1968, Haltern taught drawing and etching.  From 1972 to 1977 he studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.  His work has been shown at the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University.  He began teaching at BYU in 1978 where he is currently a professor of art.  Haltern wrote a book The Spiritual Foundation and Anagogical Level of Meaning in the Celestial Style in which he analyzes the principles he believes lead to unified art.  Down Over Yosemite (1988) was featured at the Springville Museum of Art spring salon.
