SERIALS TO BE REVIEWED BEFORE RENEWING FOR 2008

Faculty and graduate students consistently tell us that access to journals is their highest library priority and the area where they feel we most fall short. Faculty ask us for new subscriptions and longer online backfiles and the University adds new programs. We must meet those needs with a static budget and prices which consistently increase 8% a year. This is an international problem and challenges even the largest libraries. In the longer term it will probably be addressed by changes in how scholarly communication is shared. Scholars should consider how they invest their time in writing, reviewing and editing for journals. By allowing us to post copies of your articles in the University’s Institutional Repository you can provide open access to readers here and around the world.

Marriott Library subscribes to almost 20,000 serials. Most of them are clearly good publications and their use is well documented: the online Science, the paper Art in America, the packages from groups like the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers or Oxford University Press. Some periodicals -- often in Western Americana or the Middle East Library – are owned by few other libraries and are our contribution to a diverse national collection. But such actively used and unique titles are likely to go up well over $200,000 in 2008 so we must cancel other worthy titles to balance the budget. By not renewing $280,000 in subscriptions we will also have some money for high priority new subscriptions and enhanced online access.

The titles on the list are those which, compared to most of our subscriptions, have lower documented use or a higher cost per use. Some have duplicated content. We want to hear if there are reasons you will need them in the near future for your teaching or research. Please contact Barbara Cox (7-9167) by June 10, 2007.
