The attached list of titles is the result of a process begun this spring to identify $305,000 in cuts of Marriott's on-going expenditures (journals and standing orders for sets and series). Cuts are necessary because acquisitions budgets state-wide received no increase this year due to the failure of the Urgent Student Support funding category at the Utah Legislature. In a year when Marriott's journal costs went up 13.5%, this results in a substantial and on-going shortfall. Limited adjustment to this list may be possible, but we must reach our target amount. There are $60,000 worth of titles on this list whose cancellation has not been seriously contested. The rest are titles we and the faculty would prefer not to cut.
Our intent in selecting titles was to minimize damage to collections and to our ability to meet patron needs. We attempted to protect obviously important and heavily used publications, the core journals supporting smaller programs, and journals of interdepartmental or interdisciplinary interest. A library Task Force looked at each journal, compiled comments received, examined publication, price, and use history over the past four years, and recommended that we cut the titles on this list.
If you would like to appeal a particular title or ask about the methodology for choosing titles to cut, contact your Subject Selector. If it's not possible to reinstate an important journal on the current budget, you may be able to identify a substitute or use department order/cancel funds. The library maintains a Want List of desired titles and encourages faculty to suggest either new or canceled titles which belong in our collection. We intend to continue reviewing our journals and the Want List to build the best possible collection to support research and teaching on our campus within the funds available.
President Smith this year identified library acquisitions as the University's top institutional priority in our budget request. We are very hopeful that this will result in funding to cover inflation and prevent further weakening in the integrity of the library's collections.
We value the input you have given us during this process and I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and your department about this and any other library issues of concern to you.
